"Discovery of New Facts"
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has decided to reinvestigate the civilian casualty incidents that occurred in the southern region of Chungnam Province.
On the 6th, the TRC announced at the 86th plenary meeting held at the TRC headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, that it had decided to conduct a reinvestigation for the first time since its launch regarding the "Chungnam Southern Region (Buyeo, Seocheon, Nonsan, Geumsan) National Guidance Alliance and Preliminary Detention Incident."
This case was submitted to the TRC in December 2020, and on November 28, 2023, at the 67th plenary meeting, it was decided to clarify the truth. At that time, the TRC had determined the case as a civilian casualty incident based on official documents such as identity investigation reports obtained from the National Police Agency.
The TRC explained, "Recently, new facts have been discovered as the case was found not to involve victims of the National Guidance Alliance and preliminary detention but rather a violation of the National Defense Security Act, with a death sentence judgment document obtained. Therefore, the possibility of changing the existing truth clarification decision made in 2023 has increased, leading to the decision to reinvestigate."
