Prosecution Appeals 1-Year Prison Sentence for 30-Year-Old Man Who Threatened Stabbing Rampage at Seoul Station

Prosecutors: "First Trial Verdict Falls Short of Crime's Severity"

A man in his 30s who posted a message warning of a knife rampage at Seoul Station was sentenced to 10 months in prison in the first trial, and the prosecution has appealed.

Prosecution Appeals 1-Year Prison Sentence for 30-Year-Old Man Who Threatened Stabbing Rampage at Seoul Station Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office, commencing operations on the 19th.

The Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 30th that it has filed an appeal against the first trial verdict sentencing Bae (33) to 10 months in prison on charges of threat and obstruction of official duties. Previously, the police had requested a 3-year prison sentence for Bae in the first trial.

The prosecution stated, "He caused extreme confusion and anxiety in society by announcing that he would carry out a stabbing at Seoul Station, which is used by many people, and caused unnecessary waste of police manpower, making the nature of the crime serious. Also, considering that he was within the period of recidivism for similar offenses and has multiple prior convictions of the same kind, the first trial sentence does not reflect the severity of the crime," explaining the reason for the appeal.

Bae is accused of posting a message on an online community on May 22 stating, "I will carry out a knife rampage at Seoul Station on the 24th." He is also confirmed to be charged with obstructing police work by causing police officers to be dispatched to the Seoul Station area on the 24th of the same month.
