Installation of Counseling and Reporting Centers, Operation of Epidemiological Investigation Teams
Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 25th that it will strengthen the "MPOX quarantine response system" following the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of an international public health emergency due to the re-spread of MPOX (formerly known as monkeypox).
MPOX is a Class 3 legally designated infectious disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, resulting in acute fever and rash diseases. Originally an African endemic disease, MPOX has spread worldwide since May 2022, with 151 cases reported domestically last year and 10 cases so far this year. Although the outbreak seemed to be declining, the number of cases has recently increased mainly in Congo, leading to eight countries being designated as quarantine management areas.
The incubation period of MPOX is approximately 5 to 21 days. Major symptoms include fever, chills, lymphadenopathy, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms (such as sore throat, nasal congestion, cough). After 1 to 3 days, rashes appear on the face, mouth, hands, feet, chest, anus, and near the genitals. If suspected symptoms such as fever and rash occur, it is essential to visit a medical institution for diagnosis or contact 1339 for consultation.
To prepare for the spread of MPOX, Eunpyeong-gu has established a consultation and reporting center and operates an epidemiological investigation team. It has also strengthened the MPOX quarantine response system by providing medical institutions with guidelines for suspected patient treatment and enhancing public awareness campaigns.
Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, "MPOX is a disease that can be sufficiently prevented and treated," adding, "Although the general public is not eligible for vaccination, high-risk groups who have contact with patients are encouraged to actively participate in vaccination."
