The sentencing trial for Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, in the case of violating the Public Official Election Act has been postponed.


According to political and legal circles on the 22nd, Lee tested positive for COVID-19 on that day and requested a postponement of the trial date scheduled for the 23rd regarding the violation of the Public Official Election Act.


Accordingly, the sentencing trial originally scheduled for the 6th of next month will also be delayed. During the sentencing trial, the prosecution's sentencing recommendation, the defense counsel's final argument, and Lee's final statement will take place.


The court is expected to hold the sentencing trial on September 20th, which was additionally designated as a trial date. The verdict, initially expected in early October, is also likely to be postponed.


The trial for the perjury coaching case will also face setbacks. This case was scheduled to conclude arguments on the 26th and hold the sentencing trial on the 30th of next month.


If the trial is postponed due to Lee's absence, the sentencing trial and verdict for this case will inevitably be delayed as well.
