Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital Succeeds in 'WEB Treatment' for Cerebral Aneurysm

Applicable to Various Cerebral Aneurysm Conditions Without Opening the Patient's Skull

Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital Succeeds in 'WEB Treatment' for Cerebral Aneurysm Procedure scene of the Department of Neurosurgery Endovascular Treatment Team at Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital.

Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital announced on the 12th that Professor Park Jonghyun of the Department of Neurosurgery recently performed the region's first successful 'WEB treatment' for cerebral aneurysms in the Chungcheong area.

The WEB (Woven EndoBridge) treatment performed by Professor Park is an endovascular procedure for cerebral aneurysms that received FDA approval in the United States in 2017. This method involves inserting a densely woven metal mesh made of nitinol wires into the ballooned cerebral aneurysm, filling it to block blood flow and thereby eliminating the risk of rupture.

Previously, the commonly performed clipping surgery required opening the skull, and coil embolization had disadvantages such as a risk of recurrence and being unsuitable for wide-necked, large aneurysms or dissecting aneurysms. In contrast, WEB treatment does not require opening the skull, has a low recurrence rate, and can be applied to various types of cerebral aneurysms.

Professor Park Jonghyun said, "We will continue to promote WEB treatment and further advance it through ongoing research."
