Boryeong City Imposes Fines Up to 100,000 Won for Smoking Near Educational Facilities

The city of Boryeong, Chungnam Province, announced on the 12th that starting from the 17th, a fine of up to 100,000 won will be imposed for smoking within 30 meters of educational facilities such as elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as kindergartens and daycare centers in the city.

Previously, the non-smoking zone was within 10 meters of educational facilities, but with the revision of the National Health Promotion Act, it has been expanded to within 30 meters.

Accordingly, a fine of 100,000 won will be imposed for smoking in the non-smoking zone, and in accordance with the "Boryeong City Ordinance on Creating a Non-Smoking Environment and Preventing Damage from Secondhand Smoke," a fine of 50,000 won will be imposed for smoking within a straight-line distance of 50 meters from school entrances.

With the expansion of non-smoking zones, the city plans to raise public awareness by installing promotional banners near kindergartens, daycare centers, and schools, and by actively promoting through the city's website, the Manse Boryeong newsletter, and social media channels.

Jeon Kyunghee, the head of the public health center, said, "Through the expansion of non-smoking zones and active guidance and inspections, we will do our best to prevent secondhand smoke exposure among children and adolescents during their growth period and to ensure they can be educated in a pleasant environment free from cigarette smoke."
