A group that has been promoting illegal gambling websites through YouTube has been apprehended by the police.

The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 8th that they had arrested 11 people, including a man in his 20s identified as A, on charges of operating illegal gambling spaces by recruiting participants through YouTube live broadcasts. Among them, three have been taken into custody.

It was revealed that from December 2022 to last month, over a period of one year and eight months, they hosted gambling commentary broadcasts on YouTube to lure users into joining illegal gambling sites.

They recruited 4,520 gambling participants using 176 YouTube channels and obtained illicit proceeds amounting to approximately 380 billion KRW.

In the process, they even used deepfake technology to superimpose the faces of famous celebrities in order to evade investigation by law enforcement agencies.

The police are tracking the criminal proceeds and have taken pre-indictment preservation measures, and investigations into the gambling participants will continue.

Among the gambling participants, 24 teenagers have been referred to the Korea Center on Gambling Problems for prevention and treatment.

A police official stated, "We will strengthen crackdowns on illegal advertisements such as gambling using personal broadcasting platforms," and added, "We ask for active cooperation to block youth access to gambling sites."
