According to data analysis by the Jeonbuk Police, the highway traffic volume under the jurisdiction of the 9th Precinct last year was approximately 2.77 million vehicles in June, 3.01 million in July, and about 3.17 million in August. This represents a 14% increase compared to June, and traffic volume is expected to rise further during this year’s summer vacation period.
With the increase in traffic volume during the summer vacation, the number of traffic accidents has also risen. The cumulative average over three years from 2021 to 2023 shows that the number of deaths and injuries in August was up to four times higher than in June.
The 9th Precinct analyzed the main causes of traffic accidents during the summer vacation as drowsiness, speeding, inattentiveness, and failure to wear seatbelts, and continues to conduct enforcement and promotional activities to prevent traffic accidents.
Chief An Gong-seon of the precinct stated, "To prevent the spread of drunk driving during the summer vacation atmosphere, we plan to conduct intensive highway drunk driving crackdowns around nationwide resort areas for two weeks starting from the 1st of next month," adding, "We ask everyone to comply with traffic laws and wear seatbelts in all seats for a pleasant and safe trip."
