"This is Yeonjin's prison uniform"…Chinese netizens mock Korea national team's uniform

Criticized Just for Being Dark Cyan
Received Positive Reviews Domestically Unlike China

With the 2024 Paris Olympics just a week away, a Chinese blogger disparaged the uniforms of our national team, comparing them to prison uniforms from a popular drama.

On the 18th, a Chinese video news blog called 'Zhang Yuanshun' posted a video titled "Korean delegation uniforms look like Yeonjin's prison uniform." In the video, the blogger introduced the Korean team’s uniforms and then showed a photo of Park Yeonjin (played by Lim Ji-yeon) from the Netflix drama The Glory wearing a prison outfit while sitting. The comparison was made solely because the team uniforms and Yeonjin’s prison clothes share a similar blue-green (벽청, 碧靑) color.

Earlier, on the 9th, when the Korean team uniforms were unveiled, they received responses domestically describing them as "trendy." The design was so sophisticated that it was hard to distinguish from casual wear, earning the nickname "tatoo item" (meaning something to be worn continuously). The Korean uniforms were produced by Musinsa Standard, a casual wear brand under Musinsa. Overall, the uniforms consist of a belted suit setup using blue tones. This particular shade, a calm blue-green called Byeokcheong, symbolizes the East and reflects youthful spirit and progressive mindset. It was chosen with the hope that the Korean team would shine brightly among various national teams.

The top and bottom were each made from summer wool material, considering the hot weather in Paris during the Olympics. The blazer lining features a design inspired by traditional Korean blue-and-white porcelain, highlighting Korea’s traditional beauty. Additionally, a belt reinterpreting the traditional Korean official’s belt (gakdae) worn around the waist was specially made to emphasize stylishness.

Other uniform components include a T-shirt and white sneaker-type shoes made from cooling and quick-drying functional materials. Moreover, athletes are provided with silver pendant necklaces featuring the Taegeuk pattern as accessories. The 'TeamKorea' logo is engraved on the inside collar of the blazer, as well as on the T-shirt, slacks, and sneaker insoles. The athletes participating in this event will wear the official opening and closing ceremony uniforms at the determination ceremony held this afternoon at Olympic Hall in Olympic Park, hosted by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.
