Yongin City Creates 3,000㎡ Urban Forest in Jukjeon-dong

Utilization of Idle Land Left Abandoned Excluding River Areas... Completion by Year-End

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that it will create an urban forest covering an area of 3,000㎡ in the Jukjeon-dong 1070 area of Suji-gu by the end of the year.

This site is land owned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It was originally planned as a river zone under urban planning facilities but was excluded from the river zone in 1997, leaving it as idle land. However, as the site was neglected for a long time, there were continuous criticisms that it harmed the cityscape, and with increasing demands from residents for the creation of a resting space, the city decided to establish an urban forest.

The city initially planned to create the urban forest by the end of next year but decided to advance the plan by one year and complete the project by the end of this year.

The urban forest project will invest a total of about 550 million KRW, including 150 million KRW in national funds secured through the Korea Forest Service fund project, 45 million KRW in provincial funds, and 350 million KRW in city funds.

The city plans to plant various trees and garden plants here and install rest facilities so that residents can conveniently use the nearby Tancheon Stream walking trail. In particular, trees and flowers that help mitigate urban heat islands and heatwaves will be planted to aid carbon absorption and reduce fine dust.

To complete the urban forest by the end of this year, the city will finish related administrative procedures this month, conduct detailed design in August, and begin construction in September. A city official said, “Once the urban forest is established, nearby residents will be able to enjoy the park and the Tancheon Stream walking trail together.”
