Doosan Enerbility 'Brightens Up' with Czech Nuclear Power Plant Project Win... Main Equipment Supply

Reactor and Steam Generator Delivery
MOU Signed with Local Power Equipment Companies Including Skoda JS
"Cooperation Partner Spillover Effect"

On the 17th, Team Korea was selected as the preferred negotiation partner for two new nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic, valued at around 24 trillion won, increasing the likelihood of final contract confirmation in the first half of next year. Doosan Enerbility, a domestic nuclear power company, will be responsible for supplying key equipment. It will supply primary system core main equipment such as reactors and steam generators, while Doosan Skoda Power, Doosan Enerbility's Czech subsidiary, will supply secondary system core main equipment such as steam turbines. Previously, Doosan Enerbility signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in supplying nuclear power main and auxiliary equipment with local power equipment companies such as Skoda JS, based on winning the Czech nuclear power project.

Doosan Enerbility is a 'leading nuclear power company' equipped with an integrated production system from nuclear power plant equipment materials to final product manufacturing, as well as large-scale nuclear power plant material technology and self-supply capabilities. For over 40 years, it has manufactured core nuclear power equipment such as reactors, steam generators, turbines, and generators, as well as nuclear fuel handling equipment, nuclear fuel transport containers, and reactor system auxiliary equipment. The number of large reactors manufactured by Doosan Enerbility reaches 34 units, and steam generators total 124 units.

In December 2009, it also supplied key equipment for the export of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), valued at 40 billion dollars (about 47 trillion won). Doosan Group Chairman Park Jung-won hosted a nuclear power order support event in the Czech Republic last May and stated, "Based on the successful supply of main equipment to the UAE Barakah nuclear power plant, the first export, Doosan will do its best to support overseas nuclear power orders, challenging again after 15 years."

To strengthen nuclear power manufacturing technological competitiveness, Doosan Enerbility directly manages on-site technicians from partner companies. This is based on the belief that "the world's best nuclear power starts at the fingertips of on-site technicians." Doosan Enerbility's top technical experts, known as technical masters, pass on their accumulated experience to partner company technicians. Customized technical support is also provided, including partner company quality consulting and education on quality failure cases.

Doosan Enerbility has been steadily carrying out overseas nuclear power-related projects. These include ▲ nuclear power feeder pipes for the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania in May this year ▲ the 1.6 trillion won-scale secondary side construction work for the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt in 2022 ▲ instrumentation and control equipment for units 3 and 4 of the Xudabao nuclear power plant and units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China in 2021 ▲ feeder pipes for four pressurized heavy water reactors (China Jinan Phase 3 units 1 and 2, Canada Point Lepreau, Bruce unit 6).

It also secured orders for reactor modules, the core main equipment of next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs). Doosan Enerbility's reactor modules will be used in six 77MW-class SMRs by U.S. company NuScale Power, which will be installed at Romania's first SMR power plant. SMRs are considered game changers in the nuclear power industry due to their lower construction costs and reduced risks compared to large nuclear power plants. Additionally, there is a possibility that Doosan Enerbility will be selected as a supplier of reactors and other equipment for NuScale Power's $37 billion (about 50 trillion won) SMR construction project. The supply scale by Doosan Enerbility is expected to exceed 2 trillion won.

An industry insider said, "Expectations for a renaissance of K-nuclear power are growing," adding, "The trickle-down effect will appear for partner companies within 2 to 3 years at the earliest."

The Czech Republic aims to finalize the contractor and sign the contract next year following the selection of the preferred negotiation partner on the same day, with construction starting in 2029 and completion targeted for 2036.
