Danish Veterinary and Food Administration Lifts Recall on Two Buldak Bokkeummyeon Products
Samyang Foods announced on the 16th that the Danish government lifted the recall order on two out of three Buldak Bokkeum Myun products on the 15th (local time).
The products for which the recall order was lifted are the Nuclear Buldak Bokkeum Myun 2×Spicy and Buldak Bokkeum Tangmyeon. The recall order for the spiciest Nuclear Buldak Bokkeum Myun 3×Spicy product remains in effect, and its sale continues to be prohibited.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) decided to recall three types of Buldak Bokkeum Myun last month on the 11th, citing excessively high capsaicin content. Following Denmark's recall action, major global media outlets such as BBC, AP News, AFP, The Washington Post, and The Guardian reported on the issue.
Samyang Foods submitted a rebuttal stating that there was an error in the DVFA's method of measuring the capsaicin content in Buldak Bokkeum Myun. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) also sought countermeasures together with Samyang Foods and sent an official letter to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. Additionally, on the 30th of last month, a field response team composed of director-level officials was dispatched to Denmark to prompt a re-evaluation of the risk assessment for Buldak Bokkeum Myun. The DVFA explained the recall cancellation in an official letter to the MFDS, and Samyang Foods reported that the products immediately resumed sales locally.
A representative from Samyang Foods said, "Through this issue, we were able to re-examine the standards for spiciness in different countries around the world," adding, "As Buldak Bokkeum Myun is a flagship brand for K-food exports, we plan to introduce more systematic and safer products in the future."
