Battling Stage 4 Breast Cancer... Preparing for Death After Brain and Bone Metastasis
Shannen Doherty, an actress who gained great popularity as the lead character 'Brenda Walsh' in the 1990s American drama 'Beverly Hills, 90210,' has passed away at the age of 53.
On the 13th (local time), local media such as CNN and The New York Times reported that Doherty's publicist Leslie Sloan announced in a statement that she had died after a long battle with breast cancer.
Born in 1971, Doherty debuted as a child actress at the age of 10 through 'Father Murphy' and rose to fame as a high-teen star by appearing in 'Beverly Hills, 90210' alongside famous actors of the time such as Winona Ryder, Alyssa Milano, and Christian Slater. This work also made her name known in Korea in the 1990s.
In 1995, she was appointed as an exclusive model for a well-known Korean cosmetics brand, following Sophie Marceau.
Doherty shed her child actor image with the 1994 film 'Almost Dead' and the 1995 film 'Mallrats,' expanding her range with a lively image and actively participating in various works.
In September 2015, Doherty revealed her battle with breast cancer through magazine and broadcast interviews. Over the following years, her condition fluctuated between improvement and deterioration, but last year it was reported that the cancer had metastasized to other tissues such as the brain and bones.
Continuing to update her condition regularly through social media, Doherty shared in April of this year that her health had rapidly worsened and that she was preparing for the end, which saddened many.
Doherty was known to have never lost hope even in the face of extreme illness. Through various interviews and running a personal podcast, she conveyed messages of hope and solidarity to cancer patients and fans. In 2021, while battling cancer, she also appeared in the film 'My Life's List,' which tells the story of cancer patients.
Additionally, in a podcast broadcast last January, Doherty delivered an inspiring message, saying, "Every day is a gift, so I believe hope always exists." In an interview with People magazine last November, she said, "I have not yet finished living and loving," and "I still hold hope that the situation will improve."
Following the news of Doherty's passing, messages of condolence from fans and colleagues who appeared with her in various works have been pouring in on social media accounts.
