Geumcheon-gu Expands No-Smoking Zones to 30m Around Daycare Centers and Schools

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that, following the revision of the National Health Promotion Act, no-smoking zones around daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high schools will be expanded starting August 17.

The no-smoking zones, which were previously within 10 meters from the boundary of daycare centers and kindergarten facilities, will now be expanded to within 30 meters from the boundaries of daycare centers, kindergartens, and schools (elementary, middle, and high school) facilities.

Additionally, the no-smoking zone set within a 50-meter radius from school entrances (absolute protection zone) will be maintained as is.

The district is working to promote awareness by installing expanded no-smoking zone signs and pavement markings near kindergartens, daycare centers, and schools to raise public awareness of the changes in the no-smoking regulations.

A district official stated, “We plan to conduct both publicity and on-site guidance until August 16 to inform residents about the expansion of no-smoking zones following the law revision. Please be aware that a fine of 100,000 KRW may be imposed for smoking in no-smoking zones, so we ask for the residents’ attention and cooperation.”

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We will strictly manage no-smoking zones to minimize the harm of secondhand smoke to children and adolescents and to ensure they can receive education and grow up healthily in a smoke-free environment.”
