On the 10th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 'Summer Energy Saving Campaign Launch Ceremony' in Myeongdong, Seoul, together with civic groups, economic and industrial associations, and energy public enterprises.
The theme of this launch ceremony was a temperature caution declaration to maintain the appropriate indoor temperature of 26℃ during summer, when electricity demand begins to rise significantly. The event consisted of a temperature caution declaration ceremony with citizens and economic and industrial associations, and a children's musical for a healthy and cool summer. After the launch ceremony, a street campaign encouraging participation in cooling by closing doors was conducted around the Myeongdong shopping district together with civic groups.
At the 'Summer Energy Saving Launch Ceremony' with citizens held on the 10th at Ondream Society in Myeongdong, Seoul, after the temperature warning declaration and citizen participation performance, attendees including Choi Nam-ho, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (sixth from the left), Kim Dong-chul, President of Korea Electric Power Corporation (fourth from the right), and Lee Sang-hoon, Chairman of Korea Energy Agency (third from the right), are taking a group commemorative photo.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the nation's total energy consumption decreased by 3.2% compared to the previous year. However, energy and electricity consumption in commercial and public buildings, which account for 12% of total energy consumption and 34% of total electricity consumption, both increased, making energy saving in commercial and public buildings an urgent matter. Accordingly, the economic and industrial associations gathered on this day declared their participation in the temperature caution campaign and pledged to practice energy saving in the commercial sector by adhering to the appropriate temperature in stores, offices, and shopping districts.
Choi Nam-ho, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated at the launch ceremony, "Electricity consumption for cooling in the commercial sector accounts for more than 10% of total electricity consumption despite the short summer period. We hope that people will participate in energy saving by maintaining the appropriate indoor temperature during summer not only at home but also outside in cafes, shops, and other places."
