Collecting Opinions for Route Maintenance and Improvement ... Providing Safer and More Comfortable Walking Environments

Dongdaemun-gu, Safe Walking Campaign for School Routes at 21 Elementary Schools

"We hope to create an environment where parents can send their children to school with peace of mind."

This was a comment made by parents to Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, during an on-site inspection of the school commute route last May.

Seoul's Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is conducting a sequential inspection of the school commute routes for 21 elementary schools in the area until mid-month to ease the worries of moms and dads.

The district, in coordination with principals and vice principals, officials from the Dongdaemun Senior Club (an organization dedicated to senior job placement), and the Green Mothers' Association, inspects the commute routes 2 to 3 times a week during school hours to check for necessary environmental improvements to ensure children's safe travel to and from school.

For each commute route, the need for improvements such as ▲installation of traffic lights within child protection zones ▲installation of crosswalks ▲installation of stop line compliance signs ▲installation of speed enforcement cameras ▲installation of safe boarding and alighting zones has been identified. The district plans to review and implement these suggested improvements promptly to create a safer and more comfortable environment for children to commute.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "Through these commute route inspections, we will swiftly address hazards and improvements to make Dongdaemun-gu a safe city for children and a great place to raise kids."

The district, through the Dongdaemun Senior Club (an organization dedicated to senior job placement), has selected ▲100 Safe Security Guards and ▲170 Traffic Safety Helpers to be assigned to local elementary schools to assist children in commuting safely.
