Busan Cultural Center Presents Universal Ballet's "The Sleeping Beauty" Poster of Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Beauty".

"The Sleeping Beauty" is one of the "three great ballets," a masterpiece of classical ballet that brings to life the famous fairy tale by Charles Perrault through the elegant choreography of Marius Petipa and the music of Tchaikovsky.

This work, created at the height of Russian imperial ballet in the 19th century, premiered in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. For over 130 years, it has been loved by audiences worldwide, and in Korea, it was first performed by the Universal Ballet Company in 1994.

As a highly challenging piece that strictly adheres to the rigorous rules of classical ballet, it is often referred to as the "textbook of classical ballet." Due to its difficulty, it is a rare masterpiece that is not frequently performed even on the global stage.

The production features a grand stage set recreating the Florestan Palace, stunning costumes, the perfect formations of the corps de ballet showcasing the pinnacle of formal beauty, the brilliant grand pas de deux of the leads, variations by the six fairies, and divertissements featuring characters from Perrault's fairy tale, offering a visual feast. The captivating display of dance, harmonizing advanced techniques, is sure to mesmerize the audience.

Among the many ballet works, this piece is known for its long running time, with the original and other versions exceeding three hours. The distinguishing feature of this production is that, under the revised choreography by Oleg Vinogradov, the work has been adapted to be denser and more dynamic without compromising the original choreography by Marius Petipa.

The storyline has been restructured for a smoother and more condensed experience, such as replacing the dance of the six fairies in the prologue with a wedding celebration in Act II. As a result, the performance has been condensed to around 120 minutes, maintaining audience immersion.
