On the 29th of this month, Daehangno in Seoul will transform into a picnic spot and musical theater venue for visitors. Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) will hold the event "Come Play, Daehangno! Car-Free Street" on this Saturday, closing a 350-meter section from Exit 1 of Hyehwa Station on Subway Line 4 to the entrance of Seoul National University Hospital to vehicle traffic.
Vehicle restrictions will be in place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The area will be transformed into various stages for musical performances, experience booths, and picnic lounges. From 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., a variety of content under the theme "Musical Picnic" will be available for all citizens to enjoy.
The main stage will feature musical actors Shin Youngsook and Yang Junmo performing popular songs from well-known musicals such as Mozart, Rebecca, Mamma Mia, and Hero for two hours starting at 5:30 p.m. Additionally, actors from beloved Daehangno small theater productions including "VampXHunter: Howl! Phoenix Popo!!", "Eugene and Eugene", and "Kiki's Borderline Personality Disorder Diary" will perform highlights from their works.
On smaller stages, guitarist Jeong Seonho will start with a busking performance, followed by representative Daehangno plays and musicals such as "Real Bad Girl", "Someday", and "Hangover". Performances by a cappella groups "ParkKimParkKim", "3 Seconds Before", and indie band "Wine Loop" are also scheduled.
Jongno-gu will create a picnic lounge where visitors can enjoy performances, rest, and food all in one place, and will lend props for social media (SNS) photography to captivate the sensibilities of the 20s and 30s generation.
This year’s car-free street events will be held a total of five times: on the 25th of last month, the 29th of this month, August 31, September 28, and at the end of October.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, "We aim to establish the car-free street event as a representative street arts festival of Daehangno, leading a second renaissance for the area and achieving both the revitalization of performing arts and the local economy. We will support Daehangno in becoming a global performing arts hub loved by people worldwide, like Broadway in New York and the West End in London, in every possible way."
