Practical Electric Cars Leading the Era of EV Popularization
Renault Korea Unveils 'Aurora1' HEV to be Produced at Busan Plant
The 2024 Busan Mobility Show will be held at BEXCO in Busan on the 28th. This event will showcase new car trends leading the era of electric vehicle popularization. Practical compact electric vehicle models will make a grand appearance, including Hyundai Motor Company's entry-level electric car Casper Electric, Kia's compact electric car EV3, BMW's compact electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) iX2, and the new Electric Mini Cooper.
According to the Busan Mobility Show Organizing Committee on the 24th, six domestic and international automakers will exhibit 59 vehicles at this year's event. Starting with the press day on the 27th and officially opening on the 28th, the mobility show will feature five world premiere vehicles.
Hyundai Motor Company will unveil the entry-level electric vehicle model Casper Electric for the first time in the world. Casper Electric has a single-charge driving range of 315 km, which is about 110 km longer than the competing Kia Ray EV. Unlike the Ray EV, which uses an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery, Casper Electric utilizes an NCM (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese) battery, securing competitiveness with its long driving range.
Kia will introduce the EV3, the brand's third dedicated electric vehicle model. The EV3 is an ambitious model launched by Kia to lead the era of electric vehicle popularization. Equipped with an Indonesian-made NCM battery, it increases driving range while maintaining price competitiveness. The EV3's long-range model has a driving range of 501 km, and its price is set in the mid-to-high 30 million KRW range, including government subsidies. Kia will also reveal a camouflaged model of Tasman, the brand's first pickup truck scheduled for release next year.
BMW will unveil the compact electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) iX2 for the first time in Korea. BMW Group's premium compact car brand Mini will showcase the Electric Mini Cooper and Electric Mini Countryman, which are scheduled to be sequentially launched in the domestic market from the second half of this year. The third-generation new Mini is equipped with the industry's first circular OLED display made by Samsung Display.
This mobility show gains additional significance with the participation of companies based in Busan, such as Renault Korea and Geumyang. Renault Korea, headquartered and with a factory in Gangseo-gu, Busan, chose the Busan Mobility Show as the venue for the world premiere of 'Aurora 1,' opening the door to its future car project. The 'Aurora 1' (name undecided), a D-segment hybrid vehicle, is a new car introduced by Renault Korea four years after the launch of the XM3 in 2020. It was developed by combining Renault's latest hybrid drive system with the CMA platform applied to Geely Automobile and Volvo. Renault Korea will start producing the 'Aurora 1' at its Busan factory from the second half of this year.
Geumyang, a local Busan company specializing in secondary batteries, will demonstrate its self-developed cylindrical lithium-ion battery model 4695. Geumyang's strategy is to secure leadership in the electric vehicle battery market with this battery, aiming to begin mass production at its Busan Gijang factory, scheduled for completion next year.
