The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation announced on the 24th that they have selected Kim as a Hallyu artist for the 'Planning and Development of Collaborative Content Linking Hallyu in the Hanbok Field' project.
This project aims to showcase the beauty of Hanbok to the international community and support the overseas expansion of capable Hanbok brands. Lee Hae-don, Director of Cultural Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "Hallyu artists and Hanbok companies will collaborate to develop Hanbok content," adding, "We will provide multifaceted support to ensure the unique charm of Hanbok spreads worldwide."
The Ministry will select small and medium-sized enterprises to produce Hanbok inspired by Kim through a public contest. Applications will be accepted until the 8th of next month, and will be evaluated based on expertise, uniqueness, feasibility, and expected impact.
The selected companies will plan and develop Hanbok designs together with Kim. The Ministry will promote them globally through various channels, including video displays on the New York Times Square billboard. In 2022, former figure skater Kim Yuna, and last year, actress and singer Suzy, were featured to spread the beauty of Hanbok.
Kim, who has taken over the baton, is a Hallyu star active in films and dramas. She rose to stardom by sweeping rookie actress awards at various ceremonies for the film The Handmaiden (2016). Her notable works include the films 1987 (2017) and Little Forest (2018), and the dramas Mr. Sunshine (2018), Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022), and Akguie (2023).
