James E. Baker (64, photo), regarded as the top authority in the U.S. legal field related to artificial intelligence (AI), who serves as a judge at the U.S. Federal Data Protection Review Court and a professor at Syracuse University College of Law, will visit Korea to give a lecture at the "2024 Legal Tech & AI Show" (LTAS), jointly hosted by Legal Times and Messe Isang, held from June 26 to 28 at COEX, Samseong-dong, Seoul.
The exhibition will also feature Won Ho-shin, Director of Judicial Informatization at the Court Administration Office responsible for AI policies in the judiciary, and Heo Jeong, Head of the Scientific Investigation Department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, who will each give lectures on the AI policies and preparations of the courts and prosecution, respectively.
This is the first time that a U.S. AI legal expert and the top AI policy officials from the Korean courts and prosecution will appear in a public lecture. Professor Baker, a former U.S. federal judge, authored An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence for Federal Judges last year at the request of the Federal Judicial Center. This book discusses the impact of AI on judicial practice and how judges should respond, and is considered a must-read for U.S. legal professionals.
Judge Baker will participate in the LTAS opening ceremony and conference on the 26th, delivering a keynote speech titled "The Future of Law Brought by AI." He will then engage in a dialogue with AI experts from domestic universities and legal tech companies, including Professor Park Sang-chul of Seoul National University College of Law, and take questions from the audience.
On the 27th, he will visit Suwon District Court to give a lecture on "AI and the Judiciary" and also visit the Supreme Court's Computer Information Center for a roundtable discussion.
Judge Baker said, "I want to engage in conversations with Korean legal experts about how the legal profession should move forward in the AI era."
LTAS is jointly hosted by Legal Times and Messe Isang, Korea's leading convention company, and will be held for three days from the 26th to the 28th at Hall A of COEX, Samseong-dong, Seoul. The exhibition will showcase legal tech services utilizing AI technology from global legal tech companies such as LexisNexis, as well as major domestic legal tech companies including Law&Company, LBox, Law&Good, BHSN, and Loform. The exhibition is expected to attract a large number of corporate legal practitioners, law firm lawyers, judges, prosecutors, as well as the general public interested in legal tech and AI.
Alongside the exhibition, the three-day conference will feature special lectures including one by Lee Moon-han, member of the Personal Information Protection Commission, on "Generative AI and the Development Direction of Privacy Protection Policies," and another by Kang Min-gu, representative lawyer of Law Firm Dool, on "The Response and Survival Strategies of the Korean Legal Profession in the AI Era."
