Jeju Mok Gwana Night Opening 'Gyullim Yahaeng'
Until October... Various Events Including Regular Performances and Sumoongjang Changing Ceremony
On a cool spring night, an event to enjoy the charm of culture and nature will take place at the ancient sites of Jeju.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province World Heritage Headquarters (Director Kim Hee-chan) announced on the 26th that it will hold the night opening of Jeju Mok Gwana, "Gyullim Night Walk," until the end of October to widely promote the historical and cultural value and beauty of Jeju Mok Gwana and to induce revitalization of the old downtown by creating a nighttime tourism atmosphere.
Gyullim Night Walk is an event held at Jeju Mok Gwana and will be open at night for six months (May to October) following last year.
The night opening hours are from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM (except Mondays and Tuesdays), and admission is free from 6:00 PM.
During the night opening period, various programs such as regular performances, busking, the changing of the gate guard ceremony, and a mounted police parade will be prepared against the backdrop of the night views of Jeju Mok Gwana and Gwandukjeong Pavilion, providing interesting sights for residents and visitors.
In particular, this year, the landscape lighting has been improved so that local residents and visitors can enjoy evening walks at the urban historic sites.
The regular performance "Gyullim Pungak" will be held on the last Saturday of every month from May to October, featuring various performances each month including professional shows, classical music, traditional performances, bands, as well as pansori and jazz performances.
The Jeju Mok Gwana busking will start on Friday, May 24, and will be held on the last Friday of every month from June to October at Gwandukjeong Square, focusing on performances by Jeju local artists.
The gate guard changing ceremony will be held six times from May to October as a pre-event for Gyullim Pungak. This year, in addition to the existing parade route (Gwandukjeong~Tamna Square~Chilseong-ro), a new route (Gwanduk-ro~Hyangsadang~I-a~Communication Cooperation Center) will be introduced in August to revitalize the local commercial district.
To revitalize the old downtown at night, flea market communities will be actively invited in July and August, and programs for foreigners will also be operated. Reflecting the significant increase in foreign visitors during last year’s night opening, a "Foreigners’ Korean Name Writing Event" and foreign language guide services will be provided.
Kim Hee-chan, Director of the Jeju World Heritage Headquarters, said, “On the occasion of the Year of National Heritage Visits, we will foster Jeju Mok Gwana as a representative nighttime cultural heritage tourism spot,” adding, “We will strive to attract more than 35,000 nighttime visitors this year to revitalize the old downtown.”
