The Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum will present a variety of cultural events featuring books and music to citizens in June.
The June "Everyone's Annex" event will be held at 2 p.m. on the 15th at the "Generalpause" performance space in the original downtown area, led by Kim Daeun.
"Everyone's Annex" is a cultural event organized through collaboration between the museum and the private sector to discover outstanding humanities content and provide opportunities to introduce it to the public.
"Generalpause," a multi-cultural space in the original downtown, holds classical or jazz performances two to three times a week, contributing to the development and sustainability of the local performing arts scene. Above all, it plays a public role by providing local jazz musicians with ongoing opportunities to connect with the public.
The "Hong Youngho Jazz Band," performing in the June Everyone's Annex program, is a team based at Generalpause. On this day, the band will present a performance rearranging popular music that matches the humanities content in a jazz style.
For this edition of Everyone's Annex, the museum has focused on humanities content. Park Eunseol (age 12, resident of Busan), author of "Eunseol's Day," has been invited for a "book talk" to share her ordinary yet extraordinary daily life.
Publishing the book "Eunseol's Day" in 2023, Park Eunseol drew public attention and is the youngest guest ever featured at the Annex. Despite being viewed as a socially disadvantaged person (a 12-year-old girl with visual impairment), Park Eunseol expresses herself through writing, reminding us of the importance of writing as both a form of expression and a tool for communication.
Along with author Park Eunseol's story, which will offer a chance to reflect on one's own life through the daily experiences of others, there will be a special time to enjoy the music of the Hong Youngho Jazz Band, who will musically interpret scenes from the book.
Continuing its monthly performance programs, the Annex will invite the bandoneon quartet ensemble "Chinchin Tango" as the June performance team.
Founded in Busan in 2020, "Chinchin Tango" is led by composer and bandoneon player Kim Jongwan, with pianist Lee Anna, violinist Kang Soyeon, and percussionist Lee Younghun.
Chinchin Tango, known for its distinctive musical color and skill, began its active career with an invitation to perform at the Busan International Film Festival's Community BIFF "Kirby Road" in its founding year.
They performed as "Youth Mic" artists for the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region for two years until 2021, and since 2022 have solidified their presence by holding solo concerts in Busan each year. In 2023, their activities expanded to include an invited performance at the National Museum of Korea by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and selection as artists for the CJ ENM × Busan Music Creation Center "Choi Baekho Remake Album and Video Production" project.
For the "Monthly Concert" at 4 p.m. on June 22, Chinchin Tango has prepared songs fitting the theme "I Love Busan." In particular, they will present a selection of tango pieces that capture the charm of the maritime city of Busan and the melancholy of its port, offering unique music never heard before.
Tango, a genre of music and dance that originated in Argentina and is representative of South American popular music, is inseparable from the bandoneon. The bandoneon, known for its uniquely melancholic tone, is an essential instrument in tango music.
Chinchin Tango's leader Kim Jongwan, who studied under renowned bandoneonist Ko Sangji and is currently Busan's only bandoneon player, has curated a new setlist for the monthly concert under the subtitle "Nostalgia of the Port."
The performance will begin with Chinchin Tango's original piece "Sail," followed by hidden tango masterpieces evocative of the port, such as works by Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine tango composer and bandoneon player known as the "revolutionary of tango." Audiences can also look forward to hearing what kind of atmosphere will be created by a tango reinterpretation of Cho Yongpil's "Come Back to Busan Port."
Any interested citizen can participate in the program free of charge. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis through the museum's website.
Kim Kiyong, director of the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum, said, "I hope you enjoy a pleasant weekend at the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum, filled with diverse culture such as humanities lectures, performances, and exhibitions."
