Jung-gu Opens ‘Hamkke Madang,’ a Sports Facility Exclusively for People with Disabilities

Opening of Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities in July

Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced on the 23rd that it has established a sports facility exclusively for people with disabilities and held an opening ceremony the day before. Named "Hamkke Madang," this facility was created in a resting area (145㎡) next to the Jung-gu Community Center. Artificial turf was laid on the floor, and facilities for boccia, park golf, basketball, and futsal were installed. From now on, regular sports programs for people with disabilities will be operated here.

Responding to a proposal from the Disabled Sports Association, Jung-gu has been planning since July last year to create a multipurpose exercise space where people with disabilities can exercise safely and conveniently.

In July this year, a lifelong education center for people with developmental disabilities will open in Jung-gu. Benefits for electric mobility device liability insurance are being expanded for people with physical disabilities, and charging booths for electric mobility devices are also being increased. Efforts are being made to operate programs that enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities, such as rehabilitation exercise and securing lifelong education vouchers.

Opportunities for people with and without disabilities to enjoy sports activities together are also being prepared. The Jung-gu Disabled Sports Association will hold the 1st Jung-gu Disabled Community Sports Competition at Hunryeonwon Park on the 1st of next month.

Meanwhile, as of the end of February this year, 5,440 people with disabilities are registered in Jung-gu, accounting for 4.5% of the total population.
