Songpa-gu to Host 'Food Waste Diet Competition'... 124 Apartment Complexes Participating Songpa District Office building.

Songpa-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 21st that it will hold the "2024 Apartment Food Waste Reduction Competition" from this month until October as a daily practice to reduce carbon emissions amid the climate change crisis.

The district is conducting a food waste reduction competition targeting apartment complexes, which account for 45% of food waste generation, to encourage residents to proactively reduce food waste.

Through last year's competition, the district achieved a reduction of 1,938 tons (3.89%) of food waste compared to the 2022 emission volume, exceeding the general household reduction rate of 3% by 0.89%.

This competition targets 124 apartment complexes within the district that use RFID volume-based waste meters with 150 or more households. The competition is divided into four categories based on the number of households: 2,000 or more, 1,000 to less than 2,000, 400 to less than 1,000, and 150 to less than 400 households.

Judging will be conducted over six months from May to October by assessing the total amount of food waste generated, reduction rates compared to the previous year, and average waste per household. A total of 12 apartment complexes demonstrating excellent waste reduction efforts will be selected. Selected outstanding complexes will receive a certification plaque and expanded support such as replacing a total of 25 old or malfunctioning RFID volume-based waste meters.

District Mayor Seo Gang-seok stated, "We expect the competition to reduce food waste disposal costs and contribute to environmental protection such as greenhouse gas reduction," adding, "We will actively respond to the climate change crisis by discovering and promoting various projects for the environment."
