Marine Autonomous Defense Corps Comprising 22 Locations, 311 Members, and 189 Vessels

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 14th that from the 9th to the 21st, it will conduct education and training with the Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps and related organizations to strengthen civilian pollution prevention capabilities in remote island areas.

Mokpo Maritime Police conducts quarterly pollution prevention education and training in a visiting format to accommodate the Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps, who find it difficult to participate smoothly due to their livelihoods, and is establishing a solid operational system.

The Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps, composed mainly of fishing village associations, is a civilian organization that supports the maritime police in pollution prevention tasks during marine pollution accidents. The Mokpo Maritime Police Station’s corps consists of 22 units, 311 members, and 189 vessels.

The Maritime Police provided education on △ the Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps system and duties △ the use of oil-absorbent materials and oil fence installation training △ safety and health rules for pollution prevention workers in the field.

Last year, the Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps supported pollution prevention work by mobilizing fishing vessels to install oil fences during a ship sinking accident off Jaeun-do and Gageo-do in Sinan-gun, preventing additional marine pollution.

Shin Byung-seok, Director of the Marine Pollution Prevention Division, stated, “Through this education, we will reaffirm the roles of related organizations and the Marine Volunteer Pollution Prevention Corps, further strengthen pollution prevention capabilities, and do our best to maintain clean seas and minimize accident damage.”
