Event Walking the DMZ with Your Dog
Leash Under 2m Required
An event will be held where participants can walk with their companion dogs in the civilian-restricted Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Paju City announced on the 14th that it will hold the ‘2024 Paju DMZ Peace Road - Pet Trekking’ at Yulgok Wetland Park in Papyung-myeon on the 25th of this month. The ‘DMZ Peace Road’ is a cross-border walking trail that stretches from Ganghwa in Incheon to Goseong in Gangwon. This event was organized to promote the DMZ Peace Road and revitalize the tourism industry in the border area.
Hosted by Paju City and organized by the Paju Urban Tourism Corporation, the DMZ Pet Trekking is an event where participants walk the ‘Paju Imjingang Riverside Ecological Trail’ with their companion dogs. The course starts at Yulgok Wetland Park, follows the barbed wire fence path, turns back at Imjin Naru, and returns along the same route. Considering the DMZ status, photography with backgrounds of barbed wire fences and military facilities is prohibited.
On the day of the pet trekking, experiential programs such as pet hygiene and grooming, pet aromatherapy, and pet shampoo bar making will be held, along with educational programs including walking training and behavior correction. Additionally, there will be paw print making, pet caricatures, pet calligraphy, and photo zones.
To ensure that companion dogs and their owners can enjoy the event safely, Paju City has issued several guidelines. Companion dogs must be registered, have received at least the third round of vaccinations including rabies vaccination, and must wear a leash no longer than 2 meters. Dangerous dog breeds specified in the Animal Protection Act, such as Dosa dogs, Pit Bull Terriers, and Rottweilers, are not allowed to participate. Dogs with a risk of biting must wear a muzzle.
Applications can be submitted online until the 19th. For each companion dog, a minimum of one and a maximum of three guardians can participate. Participation is limited to 100 small dogs, 50 medium dogs, and 50 large dogs on a first-come, first-served basis.
