Will Become a Reformist Chairperson Firmly Opposing the Undermining of Separation of Powers
Woo Won-sik, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, officially announced his candidacy for the Speaker of the 22nd National Assembly on the 7th.
On the morning of the 7th, Woo held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and said, "We must become a reformist National Assembly that firmly opposes the undermining of democracy and national dignity, and a 'working National Assembly for the people' that swiftly addresses the pressing issues of people's livelihoods and future agendas facing the Republic of Korea." He added, "I will focus solely on opening the path of public opinion without relying on party or factional interests."
Woo stated, "Lee Jae-myung's vision for social reform and the basic society is not just Lee Jae-myung's personal proposal. My conviction is that we must move toward a basic society that takes responsibility for the lives of the people, not one of survival of the fittest."
He emphasized, "I will be a reformist Speaker who firmly opposes the violation of the separation of powers," adding, "I am someone who has fought with all my might. I will stand firmly against the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's regression of democracy and violation of the separation of powers and fight properly."

He also said, "The public sentiment from the general election gave the opposition coalition 192 seats as a warning to the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, but did not grant a constitutional amendment threshold majority," adding, "If an innovative or reformist Speaker cannot surpass the limit of 8 seats, it is nothing but an empty slogan." He continued, "The political ability of the Speaker is more important than ever to achieve results in democratic reform and solving the people's livelihood issues," and said, "Among the Democratic Party candidates for Speaker, I am the only one with experience as a floor leader who handled intense negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties."
He pledged to operate the National Assembly with speed and effectiveness, strengthen the authority of the Assembly, and not tolerate unjust prosecutorial power. He also expressed determination to accelerate solutions for people's livelihoods. Woo said, "The difficult lives of the people stem from unreasonable economic inequality and unbalanced development," and appealed, "We must swiftly resolve the five urgent national agendas our society faces: low birthrate, inequality, unfairness, climate crisis, just transition of labor, and balanced national development."
Woo stated, "I will transform the National Assembly into a forum for socio-economic reform discussions," and added, "I will open the path for the National Assembly to produce results even amid conflicts."
