Preserving Natural Ecosystems Such as Rice Fields, Valleys, and Forests to the Greatest Extent
Daejeon City announced that it will create the second arboretum in the Hodong area of Jung-gu as an eco-friendly ecological space.
The Daejeon Second Arboretum will cover an area of 1.45 million square meters (440,000 pyeong) and will feature themed exhibition gardens such as terraced gardens, grass gardens, and bubble gardens, as well as propagation and cultivation facilities, a forest gallery, a plant library, and other educational and convenience facilities.
Unlike the existing Hanbat Arboretum, the city plans to develop it as a natural-type (mountainous) arboretum that maximizes the preservation and utilization of the existing natural ecological environment, including rice paddies, valleys, and forests.
In particular, it will be designed as an ‘ecological landmark arboretum’ that preserves the city’s major plant resources and rare and specialty plants native to Bomunsan Mountain, serving public roles such as plant collection, research, ecological conservation, and education.
The plan includes three zones: facility zone, ecological exhibition zone, and research and conservation zone, with two exhibition forests and two ecological forests. Areas that were previously damaged will be restored to their original terrain with terraced gardens and landmark facilities introduced.
The city completed the basic planning service last year and, after a feasibility study in April this year, has requested the second ‘Central Investment Review,’ which is expected to be completed by July.
Park Dohyun, Director of the Environment and Greenery Bureau of Daejeon City, said, “The Daejeon Second Arboretum will be a distinctive eco-friendly ecological arboretum differentiated from Hanbat Arboretum. It will be a resting place where citizens can comfortably visit and a space rich in natural sensibility representing Daejeon.”
