'AI Index 2024' Report
Concerns Over AI Bias and Personal Data Leakage
Most Koreans believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will change the future, but nearly half also have fears about it.
According to the ‘AI Index 2024’ report by Stanford University's Human-Centered AI Institute (HAI) on the 24th, 82% of Koreans last year expected AI to change daily life within the next 3 to 5 years. This is the highest percentage among the 31 countries surveyed (average 65.7%). It was higher than the United States (57%) and China (60%), which lead AI technology.
Nearly half of the respondents expressed fear of AI. 44% agreed with the statement, “I am afraid of AI products or services.” This is a 13 percentage point increase from the previous year. While 66% responded that “AI has more advantages than disadvantages” and 76% said “AI services are interesting,” showing mostly positive reactions to AI technology, fears about AI were also significant.
In particular, concerns about bias and personal information leakage were expressed. Only 40% agreed with the statement, “I believe companies using AI will protect personal information.” Compared to the average of 31 countries (49.8%), trust in information protection is low. 55% agreed with the statement, “I do not believe AI discriminates against or holds biases against certain groups.” In other words, nearly half are concerned that AI may have biases. Ultimately, this suggests that companies need to apply trustworthy AI technology to meet consumer needs.
