Mokpo City Hadang Senior Welfare Center Issues Statement Urging Establishment of Mokpo National University College of Medicine

Establishment of Medical School at National Mokpo University in the Western Region is a 34-Year-Long Aspiration

Over 80 executives and staff members of the Mokpo Hadang Senior Welfare Center issued a statement on the 22nd demanding the establishment of a medical school at the National Mokpo University in the western region of Jeonnam, the largest medically underserved area in the country.

Dojeong, the director of Mokpo Hadang Senior Welfare Center, said, “The proportion of the population aged 65 and over in the western region of Jeonnam is as high as 27.5%, indicating a severe aging problem, and medical demand is steadily increasing.”

He continued, “Due to the absence of a medical school, elderly patients are forced to travel long distances to Gwangju, Seoul, and other cities for treatment, creating a harsh situation. To improve the seriously underdeveloped medical conditions, a medical school must be established in the western region of Jeonnam.”

The executives, staff, and members of Mokpo Hadang Senior Welfare Center expressed, “We hope that the establishment of a medical school at National Mokpo University will protect the right to life of residents in the western region of Jeonnam,” and emphasized, “Even after issuing this statement, we will actively cooperate in the establishment of the medical school at National Mokpo University and take the lead in efforts to improve the health of local residents.”
