19 Cases of Seizure Measures Totaling 586 Million Won Due to Non-Payment Despite Seizure Notice
Daejeon City announced that it has seized 19 memberships worth 586 million KRW owned by 15 individuals who have acquired memberships (golf, resorts, etc.) and sports facility usage rights over the past 13 years, targeting those with tax arrears of 500,000 KRW or more.
Since February, the city has conducted a nationwide investigation into the acquisition status of memberships by those with tax arrears of 500,000 KRW or more, sending seizure notices for 39 memberships owned by 30 individuals who failed to pay local taxes without justifiable reasons.
As a result, 52 million KRW was collected from 15 individuals, and for 19 cases involving 15 individuals who did not pay their arrears within the designated payment deadline specified in the notice, memberships worth 586 million KRW were seized.
For two defaulters owning sports facility usage rights of corporations scheduled to close, the usage rights were immediately seized and the deposit refunds were collected to cover the arrears.
The seized memberships will be used to encourage final payment, and if unpaid, they will be auctioned to cover the outstanding tax amounts.
Kim Ho-cheol, head of the Taxation Division of Daejeon City, stated, “We have taken seizure measures to raise awareness among defaulters who have economic means, such as owning high-value memberships, yet fail to pay taxes, and to implement trustworthy tax administration.” He added, “We will continue to develop various collection methods and make every effort to collect tax arrears.”
