Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The April 19 Revolution proved that the people are the owners of the country," and promised, "I will deeply engrave the spirit of April 19."
On the 64th anniversary of the April 19 Revolution on the 19th, Governor Kim posted on his social media service (SNS), "There is a special memorial tower at my alma mater, Deoksu Commercial High School," and introduced, "Choi Jeong-su and Kim Jae-jun, who were high school students at the time, took to the streets 64 years ago today to resist dictatorship and sacrificed their lives."
He continued, "It was ordinary students and citizens like these who proved that the people are the owners of the country," adding, "We honor the firm roots of democracy in the Republic of Korea and the ordinary yet great spirits of April. I will deeply engrave the spirit of the April 19 citizen revolution that drove out injustice."
The April 19 Revolution was a democratization movement that occurred on April 19, 1960, in the Republic of Korea, where students and citizens rose up to protest against the corruption of the Rhee Syngman government and the fraudulent March 15 election. The preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea states that it inherits the democratic ideals of April 19, which resisted injustice, and it is regarded as a successful democratic revolution in Asia.
