June 29... Wagner, Brahms, Schumann, Strauss
Violinist Lee Ji-yoon, who is currently serving as concertmaster of the prestigious German orchestra Berlin Staatskapelle, will hold a solo recital on June 29 at the IBK Chamber Hall in the Seoul Arts Center.
Lee Ji-yoon will perform "Tr?ume (Dreams)" from Richard Wagner's song cycle Wesendonck Lieder as the opening piece. She will then play Johann Strauss's "Violin Sonata," Robert Schumann's "Three Romances," and conclude the recital with Johannes Brahms's "Violin Sonata No. 2."
Berlin Staatskapelle, founded in 1570, is a renowned German orchestra boasting a history of over 450 years. Legendary composers such as Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, and Richard Strauss served as music directors, and distinguished conductors like Wilhelm Furtw?ngler and Herbert von Karajan have led the orchestra.
Since May 2018, Lee Ji-yoon has been the concertmaster of Berlin Staatskapelle on a lifetime appointment. She is the first East Asian female concertmaster and holds the record as the youngest concertmaster.
She began playing the violin at the age of four and studied under Kolja Blacher at the Berlin University of the Arts after attending the Korea National University of Arts.
Her debut album, "Korngold & Nielsen Concertos," released in 2018, received critical acclaim, being selected as "Editor's Choice" by both BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone Magazine. Her second album, "Mythes," released in 2020, featuring works by Szymanowski, Bart?k, Stravinsky, and Ravel, was praised by Gramophone as "an outstanding album that solidifies Lee Ji-yoon's reputation and establishes her as a performer to watch in the future."
The accompaniment will be provided by pianist Ilya Rashkovsky, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, who previously collaborated with her in 2020. Rashkovsky, originally from Russia, has won top prizes at prestigious international competitions including 2nd place at the Long-Thibaud Competition in France, 4th place at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium, 3rd place at the Rubinstein Piano Competition in Israel, and 1st place at the Hamamatsu Piano Competition in Japan, and is currently active worldwide.
