Expectations for University Entrance Environment Improvement to Transform into a Community Space for Local Residents
Daejeon City announced plans to transform vacant houses and empty lots in the old downtown area into small neighborhood parks.
Until now, as part of urban regeneration efforts, abandoned vacant houses were demolished and temporarily used as parking lots for residents' convenience. However, new issues arose, such as the accumulation of household waste on the remaining empty lots.
In response, the city plans to create parks from vacant houses and empty lots, considering the lack of community spaces in the densely populated residential areas of the old downtown.
To this end, the city aims to establish a total of 20 parks within a 10-minute walking distance by 2027. It selected the main road entrance of Korea Polytechnic University in Gayang-dong, Dong-gu, as a pilot project site based on recommendations from autonomous districts.
This location, despite being frequented by university students, bus stop users, and local residents, had long been used as a junkyard, causing noise and aesthetic complaints.
After a residents' briefing session, the city plans to finalize the project plan in April, begin construction in May, and complete it by October.
Park Dohyun, Director of the Environmental Greenery Bureau of Daejeon City, stated, “We will continue to expand leisure spaces in the old downtown, which relatively lacks parks, including Daejeon Second Arboretum (Hodong, Jung-gu), The Perry Park (Gayang-dong, Dong-gu), and Daedong Sky Park (Yongun-dong, Dong-gu).”
