Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Free Safety Inspection Campaign for Powered Water Leisure Vehicles

Prevention of Engine Failures in Powered Water Leisure Equipment and Promotion of Safety Culture During Spring Outing Season

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Officer Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 1st that it will conduct free inspections and a safety campaign for powered water leisure equipment at the Samho Small Fishing Boat Loading Yard in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 13th.

This is part of proactive administration to prevent marine accidents caused by water leisure activities during the spring outing season. Last year, Mokpo Maritime Police conducted free inspections once in the first half and once in the second half of the year, inspecting 32 powered water leisure devices.

Among 104 water leisure equipment accidents in the past three years, 61 cases (59%) were engine failure accidents. It has been analyzed that accidents increase from the spring outing season when powered water leisure equipment, which had been left unused during the winter, starts being used again.

Accordingly, Mokpo Maritime Police will collaborate with the Korea Maritime Safety Authority (KOMSA) and specialized inspection companies to provide free equipment inspections and training on how to respond to engine failures. They will also conduct a safety campaign to promote safety rules that must be followed during leisure activities.

Free inspections can be reserved in advance until the 11th, and those who make advance reservations will receive a small safety item as a gift.

A representative of Mokpo Maritime Police said, “For safe and enjoyable leisure activities, we ask that powered water leisure equipment that has not been operated for a long time during the winter be inspected in advance and that safety rules be thoroughly understood.”
