GC Cell appoints Won Sung-yong as new Head of Cell Therapy Research Institute

GC Cell (GCsel) announced on the 25th that it has recruited Dr. Won Sung-yong as the head of the Cell Therapy Research Institute.

Dr. Won, the new head of the institute, graduated from the Department of Biology at Kyung Hee University and earned a master's degree in microbiology from the same university's graduate school. He then obtained a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Texas Medical Branch and worked as a researcher in immunology and genetics at the Scripps Research Institute in California. Subsequently, he gained diverse experience at CJ CheilJedang, GC Green Cross LabCell, GC Green Cross Holdings, Artiva Biotherapeutics, and HK Innoen.

Dr. Won is recognized as an expert with extensive research and development (R&D) experience and networks in the field of cell and gene therapy. He is expected to establish new perspectives and momentum to strengthen GC Cell’s R&D pipeline and the competitiveness of immune cell therapies. GC Cell has also submitted a proposal to appoint Dr. Won Sung-yong as a new inside director at the regular shareholders' meeting scheduled for the 27th.

A GC Cell official stated, “Based on Dr. Won’s outstanding achievements in the development of cell and gene therapies and biopharmaceuticals, as well as his experience in collaborative research and development through open innovation, we expect him to bring new momentum to GC Cell’s research and development.” The official added, “GC Cell will focus more on strengthening its innovative R&D pipeline, including new cell and gene therapy research to overcome cancer and intractable diseases, as well as allogeneic natural killer (NK) cells and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T/NK therapies.”
