On the 17th, Gwangju Dongbu Police Station announced that on the 14th, they conducted promotional activities to prevent and eradicate illegal gambling among elementary, middle, and high school students in the Jangdong academy district and around the Central Library.
Recently, as the number of youths accessing illegal gambling sites after being enticed by advertisements on SNS has increased, the side effects of gambling have caused various social problems, such as students’ maladjustment to school, running away from home, and secondary crimes including property crimes to fund gambling. Therefore, preventive activities were necessary.
In particular, on this day, in areas frequented by youths such as academy districts and libraries, promotional leaflets were distributed to raise awareness about the types of illegal gambling among youths and the dangers of gambling addiction. They also informed that even gambling out of mere curiosity can be a crime, thereby raising vigilance.
A police official stated, "Youth, who are the hope of the future, are easily exposed to gambling crimes, which has become a social issue. We will continue special preventive education on addiction crimes such as gambling and various promotional activities in cooperation with related institutions such as local schools. We will work harder to ensure that youths can grow up in a safe environment."
