Korea Student Aid Foundation Invites Nobel Laureate Barry Marshall for Lecture ... Australian Physiologist

The Korea Student Aid Foundation (Chairman Bae Byeong-il) and the Australian Embassy (Jeff Robinson, Australian Ambassador-designate to Korea) will jointly hold a special lecture for national outstanding science and engineering scholarship students by inviting Barry James Marshall (73), an Australian physiologist and Nobel laureate, on the 29th at 10 a.m. The event will take place in the large conference room on the basement first floor of the Yonsei Severance Building in Jung-gu, Seoul.

Dr. Barry Marshall received the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the Helicobacter pylori bacterium and has continued various academic research, publications, and lectures even after receiving the Nobel Prize. Dr. Marshall is also very familiar to us as he has worked as a model for a Korean food and beverage company’s advertisement.

Dr. Barry Marshall was awarded the Nobel Prize along with his colleague Dr. Robin Warren for pioneering research in the field of gastric ulcers. To prove his theory that the cause of gastric ulcers was not stress but the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, Dr. Marshall infected himself with the bacterium and then treated himself with antibiotics.

The special lecture held in conjunction with Dr. Barry Marshall’s visit aims to inspire hope and confidence in outstanding national science and engineering scholarship students and motivate them to continue their academic challenges. This event is organized through close cooperation between the Australian Embassy and the Korea Student Aid Foundation.

In this lecture, Dr. Barry Marshall will share his challenges and growth as a scientist and his experience of winning the Nobel Prize with the scholarship students under the theme “Innovation and Curiosity Driven Research.”

This lecture, where students can meet a senior who has already experienced the dreams they want to achieve and hear vivid experiences firsthand, is expected to encourage students who will work in the science and engineering fields to gain confidence that they can succeed and help them establish concrete plans for their careers.

The Korea Student Aid Foundation is a public institution established to support educational opportunities for anyone with will and ability. It carries out various projects to support students’ studies, including customized national scholarships, student loans, talent development support projects, and dormitory operations.

In particular, it operates the Presidential Science Scholarship and the National Outstanding Science and Engineering Scholarship to nurture talent in the science and engineering fields.

The Presidential Science Scholarship is designed to discover and nurture the best students with creativity and potential in the science and technology fields to cultivate a world-class core group of scientists. It provides full tuition coverage and a semester study encouragement allowance of 2.5 million KRW. For basic livelihood security recipients, an additional 2.5 million KRW per semester for living expenses is provided. For those studying at overseas universities, an annual support of USD 50,000 for tuition and living expenses is provided.

The National Outstanding Science and Engineering Scholarship aims to actively attract excellent talent to science and engineering fields, nurture them as core national talents, and secure national competitiveness in science and technology. It covers full tuition and provides an additional 2.5 million KRW per semester for living expenses to basic livelihood security recipients.

Bae Byeong-il, Chairman of the Korea Student Aid Foundation, said, “To nurture world-class talent, it is necessary not only to provide financial support such as scholarships but also to offer many opportunities to meet global talents, share experiences, and strengthen achievement motivation.” He added, “I hope this meeting with a Nobel laureate will serve as an opportunity for our students to build confidence to continuously challenge themselves toward the dream of winning a Nobel Prize without fearing failure.”
