Overcoming the Climate Crisis, Public Officials Leading by Example
Office Carbon Neutrality Practice Campaign 5+1 Promotion
All public officials in Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, have taken action to practice carbon neutrality in their offices.
On the 22nd, the city conducted the ‘All Employees Office Climate Action 5+1 Pledge, Climate Action Day Campaign,’ certifying the practice of office carbon neutrality in front of the cafeteria during lunchtime and pledging climate action.
The employees' resolution items (practice rules) include ▲using reusable cups ▲deleting emails+double-sided printing ▲adopting a low-carbon diet ▲using the stairs on the 2nd floor ▲using personal handkerchiefs ▲joining the Carbon Neutrality Points program.
On that day, a vegetarian menu was provided in the cafeteria to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and practicing vegetarianism can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 3,250g per person (equivalent to planting 0.35 pine trees grown for 30 years). The city hall cafeteria operates ‘Vegetarian Days’ about 2.5 times per month on average, on the 8th, 22nd, and 30th (every other month).
The city plans to strengthen voluntary practice by providing incentives and positive experiences to employees as it reorganizes the ‘Start with Public Officials!’ campaign into Season 2 this year.
By adding joining the Carbon Neutrality Points system to the existing five climate actions, linked with incentives from the Ministry of Environment, every Tuesday will be operated as a day to erase digital carbon footprints.
Jeong Sook-yi, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, said, “The climate crisis may sound vague and difficult, but individual efforts start with easy and consistent practices in daily life,” and added, “I hope all employees will take the lead and make climate action a part of their everyday lives starting with ourselves, the public officials.”
