In the Democratic Party primary election held ahead of the 22nd National Assembly election, incumbent lawmakers in the Gwangju area faced defeat.
The Democratic Party Central Election Commission announced 21 regions for the first round of primaries on the 21st at 1 p.m. In the Gwangju area, Dong-gu Nam-gu (Gap), Buk-gu (Gap), and Buk-gu (Eul) were announced, and all three incumbent lawmakers were eliminated.
The Dong-gu Nam-gu (Gap) electoral district held a two-person primary between incumbent lawmaker Yoon Young-deok and Jung Jin-wook, the Democratic Party leader’s special political advisor. Preliminary candidate Jung Jin-wook defeated preliminary candidate Yoon Young-deok to secure a spot in the general election.
In the Buk-gu (Gap) electoral district, incumbent lawmaker Cho Oh-seop faced lawyer Jung Joon-ho in a one-on-one match, with lawyer Jung emerging victorious.
The Buk-gu (Eul) electoral district also held a two-person primary including an incumbent, where former presidential secretary Jeon Jin-sook defeated current lawmaker Lee Hyung-seok to advance to the general election.
Reconsideration requests can be filed within 48 hours after the nomination decision.
From the 26th to the 28th, the Democratic Party primaries in Dong-gu Nam-gu (Eul) and Gwangsan-gu (Eul) will be conducted as public participation primaries, and the Gwangsan-gu (Gap) primary is expected to be held in early next month.
The remaining two districts, Seo-gu (Gap) and Seo-gu (Eul), have not yet finalized their primary candidates.
