Used Goods Platform Danggeun Falls Out of Top 15 Rankings
Ahead of this year's Lunar New Year holiday, the popular search term 'Spam' disappeared from the list compiled by the secondhand trading platform Danggeun.
According to Danggeun on the 10th, Spam did not rank within the top 15 popular search terms from January 3 to 7. Holiday-related items such as 'gift set' ranked 4th and 'hanbok' ranked 6th, but Spam did not make it to the top ranks. Spam had previously ranked 4th and 7th in the popular search terms just before the Lunar New Year holiday (January 18-20) and Chuseok holiday (September 25-27) last year, respectively.
As online secondhand goods trading becomes more active, many consumers tend to sell or buy products received as gifts during holidays at relatively low prices, which is reflected in the popular search term list.
Spam has been considered a representative holiday gift item because it is easier to store than fresh food and can be gifted without much burden. It was also a typical item for 'Myeongjeol Tech.' 'Myeongjeol Tech' is a coined term combining 'Myeongjeol' (holiday) and 'jaetech' (financial technology), referring to making profits by trading holiday-related products.
The continuation of 'Myeongjeol Tech' seems to be influenced by high inflation and the spread of resale culture. Buyers can purchase gift sets at relatively low prices during high inflation, reducing living expenses, while sellers can profit by selling unnecessary gift sets, thus activating secondhand trading.
Some in the distribution industry analyze that the disappearance of Spam from consumers' interests reflects the diversification of gift set types. In particular, the trend of seeking healthier gifts is believed to have led to a decline in the popularity of processed foods like ham and sausages, resulting in a drop in Spam's popularity.
