Half the Calories, One-Tenth the Sugars
20·30 Sales Up 8.7%P Compared to Regular Ice Cream
CU announced on the 23rd that Lala Sweet ranked first in ice cream sales this month. Lala Sweet is a premium ice cream brand with a concept of low sugar, sugar-free, and low calorie.
The top-selling product in the Lala Sweet series is the ‘Chocolate Choco Bar (3,300 won).’ It is a bar ice cream topped with thick chocolate coating and almond flakes on chocolate ice cream, allowing you to enjoy both sweet taste and crispy texture. Compared to similar products, the calorie content is reduced by half and the sugar content is lowered by more than 90%. It features a sweet taste preserved by using zero-calorie alternative sweeteners developed through years of research and development.
Along with the Chocolate Choco Bar, the Vanilla Choco Bar, released at the same time, ranked third in ice cream sales this month. These two products sold more than 300,000 units nationwide at CU stores from January 1 to 20, continuing their high sales momentum. They also ranked first and second in search terms on CU’s own commerce application, Pocket CU.
The age group that purchased Lala Sweet the most was the 20s and 30s. The sales proportion for the 20s and 30s was 68.7%, which is 8.7 percentage points higher than general ice cream (60.7%) during the same period. Although it is a premium ice cream priced in the 3,000 won range, the sales reflect the spreading culture among the MZ generation of not sparing expenses on health.
Riding this trend, CU will sequentially release three low-calorie corn-flavored Lala Sweet products (Sand, Pint, Monaka) starting from the 24th of this month.
Park Hyeri, MD of the Snack Food Team at BGF Retail, said, “The craze for Lala Sweet is a representative case that breaks the existing stereotype that ice cream is a product far from health and brings customers’ needs for health management to convenience stores.” She added, “CU will continue to lead industry trends by launching products targeting even customers’ latent demand.”
