Booked After a Month-Long Investigation Tracking Overseas IP Addresses
"Hope the Perpetrator is Punished to Prevent Further Victims"
A man in his 20s, referred to as "A," has been booked by the police for repeatedly sending abusive direct messages (DMs) via social media to the victim of the so-called "Busan spinning kick incident."
On December 8, the Busanjin Police Station in Busan announced that A has been booked and is under investigation on charges including obscene acts using communication media and making threats.
A is accused of sending multiple messages containing abusive language to the social media account of B, the victim of the "Busan spinning kick incident," starting around August of this year.
A used misogynistic language and made inappropriate remarks, and also sent messages stating, "If I see you on the street, I will hit you."
After receiving a complaint from B, the police tracked overseas IP addresses and, after about a month, were able to identify and book A.
Regarding this case, B stated, "I am suffering," and added, "Crime victims live or die by a single word."
B pointed out the impact of inappropriate expressions in online spaces on victims, stating that such crimes "harm countless people because anonymity is guaranteed."
B further emphasized, "There is a saying that a petty thief becomes a great thief. I hope the perpetrator is punished this time so that there will not be more victims in the future."
Meanwhile, the "Busan spinning kick incident" refers to a "random crime" that took place last year in Busan, where a man in his 30s attempted to sexually assault a woman waiting for an elevator in an officetel by violently attacking her.
The perpetrator of this incident was indicted on charges of attempted murder during rape under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, after following the victim, B, for about 10 minutes as she returned home in Busanjin District around 5 a.m. on May 2, 2022, and assaulting her in the officetel entrance. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Supreme Court.
Initially, he was indicted on charges of attempted murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison at the first trial. However, after additional evidence, such as the discovery of the perpetrator's DNA on B's jeans, was found, the charge was changed to attempted rape and murder in the appeals court.
After the Supreme Court's final ruling, the victim stated, "The perpetrator may be thinking about how to live for the next 20 years, but the victim must live the rest of her life wondering how to survive even after 20 years. It is extremely sad."
