Gyeonggi Province held a presentation event showcasing successful commercialization cases of outstanding technologies in the system semiconductor field. System semiconductors, also known as non-memory semiconductors, are distinguished from memory semiconductors. The global market size of system semiconductors is 400 trillion KRW, which is twice the 200 trillion KRW market size of memory semiconductors. South Korea's representative semiconductor companies, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are memory companies engaged in DRAM and NAND businesses.
On the 8th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it held the ‘2023 System Semiconductor OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) Technology Development (R&D) Support Project’ outstanding technology commercialization case presentation at the Korea Nano Technology Institute in Gwanggyo Techno Valley, Suwon.
Co-hosted by Gyeonggi Province and the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development and organized by the Korea Nano Technology Institute, this presentation event was prepared to strengthen the capabilities of related companies in the province by sharing various technology development achievements and successful technology commercialization cases of participating companies in the system semiconductor field.
The case presentation, attended by about 60 representatives from system semiconductor-related companies and affiliated organizations, featured five topics: ▲Development of GaN on SiC HEMT epitaxial wafer technology for high-frequency power semiconductors ▲Development of an interaction module including a body-attached multi-composite sensor ▲Autonomous sterilization robot including a human-safe 222nm UV-C LED dedicated module ▲Integrated platform for device model parameter extraction linking nanofab and fabless ▲Semiconductor ALD equipment coating technology and next-generation batteries.
Song Eun-sil, Director of the Semiconductor Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "I hope this case presentation event will serve as an opportunity for the technologies of local companies to grow further," adding, "Next year, we plan to prepare various support measures such as technology development and talent cultivation to foster the system semiconductor and fabless (semiconductor design specialized companies) industries."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province and the Korea Nano Technology Institute supported a total of 5.5 billion KRW in research funds to 19 promising startup companies in the system semiconductor field within the province this year. Additionally, from May to November, they have been providing specialized OSAT education in four sessions for system semiconductor-related companies, among other various support efforts to nurture the system semiconductor industry.
