"At Least Once a Year for Any Occasion... Camp David Agreement"
Upcoming Weekend ROK-US-Japan Security Chiefs Meeting... Including Economic Security and Advanced Technology
The Presidential Office is pushing forward with plans to hold the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit next year in South Korea.
A senior official from the Presidential Office met with reporters on the afternoon of the 7th at the Yongsan Presidential Office and stated, "The Camp David agreement includes the idea that the leaders of Korea, the U.S., and Japan should meet at least once a year on some occasion," adding, "From our country's perspective, we are exploring the possibility of inviting the leaders of Japan and the U.S. to South Korea to hold the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit."
Earlier, the three leaders held their first standalone summit at Camp David, the U.S. President's retreat, in August and agreed to regularize the summit meetings to further strengthen cooperation. This includes meetings at various levels such as national security advisors and foreign ministers, as well as high-level consultative bodies. At that time, President Yoon said, "Personnel at various levels will meet annually in each field to closely coordinate cooperation measures among the three countries."
In line with this, the agenda for the upcoming Korea-U.S.-Japan national security advisors meeting scheduled for the 8th and 9th includes matters discussed between Korea and the U.S. during the state visit to the U.S. in April, as well as issues deliberated at Camp David. The official elaborated, "Accordingly, beyond existing national security issues among Korea, the U.S., and Japan, we are creating sectoral dialogue channels covering a wide range of areas including economic security, advanced technology, cyber, and exchanges for future generations, aiming to derive concrete agreements through these channels as a continuation of our commitments." He added, "On Friday (the 8th), there will be a separate Korea-U.S. national security advisors meeting, and after the Korea-U.S.-Japan meeting on Saturday (the 9th), there will also be consultations on protecting advanced technology between Korea and the U.S.," emphasizing, "Most topics between Korea-U.S. and Korea-U.S.-Japan will be comprehensively covered."
Meanwhile, the Korea-U.S.-Japan national security advisors meeting will be attended by Cho Tae-yong, South Korea's National Security Advisor; Jake Sullivan, U.S. White House National Security Advisor; and Takeo Akiba, Director-General of Japan's National Security Secretariat.
