This inspection is carried out in accordance with the '5th Government-wide Seasonal Fine Dust Management Plan,' implemented at the government level from December to March each year, when high concentrations of fine dust are most frequent, to reduce the frequency and intensity of occurrences and protect public health. The inspection targets domestic and international ships' fuel oil sulfur content and dust-generating businesses in ports, focusing on the dust suppression facilities.
The sulfur content in fuel oil used by ships is identified as a major cause of air pollutants such as greenhouse gases and fine dust in port areas. The sulfur content standards for fuel oil used by ships operating domestically are set at 0.5% or less for heavy oil and 0.05% or less for diesel.
During the inspection period, Jeju Maritime Police will focus on checking ▲ compliance with the sulfur content standards in ship fuel oil ▲ illegal incineration and soot emissions ▲ dust suppression facilities at port cargo handling facilities.
A Jeju Maritime Police official said, "We ask for the active cooperation of maritime workers to reduce fine dust that may occur in port areas and to create a clean marine environment."
