UNIST, Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital and 15 Institutions Participate
Research Group Launched Last February, Industry-Academia-Research-Hospital Collaboration
The Leukemia Ultra-Precision Bio Research Group held a seminar on blood cancer diagnosis and treatment technology at 3 p.m. on the 27th at UNIST.
This research group is an industry-academia-research-hospital network organization launched in February last year by UNIST and Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital to conduct full-cycle leukemia research and development.
The seminar was organized for universities, hospitals, companies, and research institutions affiliated with the research group to share the latest technologies and trends in the field of blood cancer and to further discover next-generation blood cancer research areas.
On the 27th, industry-academia-research-hospital stakeholders attending the academic seminar of the Leukemia Ultra-Precision Bio Research Group held at UNIST are taking a commemorative photo.
In his welcoming remarks, Lee Jae-yong, Vice President of UNIST, said, “This year’s academic seminar has become a place where more diverse topics are shared with greater interest than last year,” and added, “I hope that the technology exchange through the seminar will lead to the development of core technologies for blood cancer treatment.”
The seminar focused on digital medical technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence.
Professor Kim Dong-wook of Eulji University Hospital, Team Leader Lee Jung-yong of SK Telecom, and Dr. Park Chan-hee of Theragen Bio gave presentations on topics including ‘Blood Cancer Big Data Platform and Artificial Intelligence Development,’ ‘Big Data and Database,’ and ‘Cloud Environment-Based Omics Data Analysis Platform,’ respectively.
CEO Lee Do-young of Optorain, CEO Ahn Sung-min of ImmunoPosi, and Center Director Han Sung-hee of GC Green Cross Foundation revealed precision diagnosis and targeted anticancer drug treatment technologies based on genome and other data.
They presented on the topics of ‘Ultra-Precision Diagnostic Method Digital PCR,’ ‘Preclinical New Drug Development for Blood Cancer Targeted Anticancer Drugs,’ and ‘Blood Cancer Testing and Precision Diagnosis,’ respectively.
Professor Lee Chang-wook of the Department of Life Sciences at UNIST introduced the role of basic research in the biomedical industry under the theme of ‘Basic Bio Research.’
In addition to UNIST and Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital, 13 institutions participated in this event, including Dong-A University Hospital, Daewoong Pharmaceutical, Ilyang Pharmaceutical, Novartis Korea, Green Cross Medical Foundation, SK Telecom, Korea BMS Pharmaceutical, Optorain, ImmunoPosi, Theragen Bio, Pharos iBio, Otsuka Korea, Seoul CRO, and Korea Medicare.
Attending the event, Ahn Hyo-dae, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Ulsan City, emphasized, “Ulsan City has laid the foundation for the precision medicine industry by conducting the nation’s first ‘10,000 Genomes Project.’”
Deputy Mayor Ahn added, “I hope that genome data and analysis know-how will be usefully applied to the leukemia treatment development currently being promoted by the research group.”
The Leukemia Ultra-Precision Bio Research Group is led by Professor Kim Hong-tae of the UNIST Leukemia Research Institute and Professor Kim Dong-wook of Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital, a world authority in the field of chronic myeloid leukemia.
They have produced significant achievements in precision medicine, such as discovering genes responsible for the acute progression of chronic myeloid leukemia and elucidating the functions of genes related to resistance to targeted anticancer drugs. They have also actively supported technology commercialization.
Professor Kim Dong-wook of Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital said, “The ‘Leukemia Ultra-Precision Bio Research Group,’ launched as the nation’s first collaborative research system among industry, academia, research, and hospitals, will do its best to lead to the birth of many global bio companies in the blood cancer field.”
