User Participation-Based Problem Solving Method
Services Such as Smart Poles and Bus Stops
A resident-participatory smart city pilot service called 'Smart City Living Lab' will be established in Dongtan 2 New Town, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. The 'Smart City Living Lab' is a method where residents directly participate in the process of building smart city services using smart Internet of Things (IoT), big data, artificial intelligence (AI), etc., to derive necessary services and solve problems that arise during operation.

Hwaseong City announced on the 18th that it has finalized the pilot service construction project for the 'Dongtan 2 Smart City Living Lab,' which has been promoted in cooperation with Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) to realize a citizen-led smart city.
The 'Dongtan 2 Smart City Living Lab' has been promoted by the city and LH since July 2020 with an investment of 2.5 billion KRW. A citizen participation group consisting of about 90 residents from Dongtan 4 and 5 districts identified local issues and, through meetings with experts, derived smart city services such as smart poles, smart bus stops, and media facades to address these problems.
LH announced that it will complete the construction of the derived smart city services by the first half of next year.
The city stated that it will promote the project so that citizens can lead the entire process of smart city services by collecting resident feedback on the pilot services and making improvements, thereby increasing satisfaction and advancing into a differentiated smart city.
The city added that it plans to operate segmented living labs by urban, rural, and fishing village sectors next year to discover smart city services tailored to regional characteristics.
Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong City, said, "This Dongtan 2 Smart City Living Lab project will be a good precedent for realizing a citizen-centered smart city through governance establishment among citizens, public institutions, and research organizations."
