Only Fake Items on Display Stolen and Fled
Apprehended by Police After About 5 Hours of Escape
An unidentified man broke into a jewelry store in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, stole precious metals, and was caught by the police. However, it was revealed that all the stolen precious metals were counterfeit.
The Suwon Southern Police Station in Gyeonggi announced on the 12th that around 3 a.m., a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. A, broke the glass entrance door of a jewelry store in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, with a hammer and entered.
According to the police, after entering the store, Mr. A damaged the display cases and stole several counterfeit precious metal items, then quickly fled on a motorcycle. The broken entrance door triggered the alarm bell of a private security company, and the company personnel who checked the scene reported it to the police.
The police identified the suspect’s identity and escape route through nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. About five hours after the incident, at around 8:40 a.m. on the same day, Mr. A was urgently arrested by the police at a motel in Paldal-gu, Suwon.
Typically, most of the precious metals displayed in jewelry store cases are counterfeit. When a customer selects an item from the counterfeit display, the genuine product is then brought out to show them. Mr. A stole only the counterfeit items without realizing this fact.
The police plan to investigate Mr. A regarding the specific motive and circumstances of the crime.
